Uses
- Long and thin branchesAny sort of willow is suitable, including basketry willow, and other plants like alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus), … Pruning them each year about the same point gives you long and thin branches. That's what I do for a willow hedge, here is a part of my yearly crop
- I use these thin and long branches to make coat hangers, toilet brushes, fences
protection devices for trees
… and of course baskets !
- Forks From pruning shrubs. For some gardeners, pruning means a triple chore (cutting, picking, carrying away). For me, it means treasure hunting, and « everybody wins » with on the spot leftovers mulching.
- I use forks to make coat hangers and hooks, … and I not only get forks, but also drills for fire, wood for pencils and pens, bark … and small firewood.
- Straight branches, diameter : a few cmThey can be found among ash trees or sweet chestnut trees. I make broom sticks or stakes.
- Mini anchors to fasten my necklaces ? Ash trees !
- Splints … hazel splints, to bind (nearly) anything or make baskets like this one
- BIG branchesto carve spoons, pots or other objects ? Except toxic species, all can be tested … and sometimes be surprising !
- VERY BIG logs to make seats, benches, … even pine trees are suitable, just remove the bark, and let the rain wash it to avoid resin.
