![]() Nettles have a few dedicated spots in my garden. Because I want young fresh shoots during (nearly) all the year, as well as long stems without ramification. |
Uses
- Of course, what I eat is the young shoots. Most of the time, I collect them directly into a pan, with scissors: I cut clean young shoots, without the stems, so that they directy fall into the pan.
Then, most of the time I add a grated potato (with a hand grate, no electric grate), water and sea water (if I have some) as salt.
Cooking: 10 mn, cooling and end of cooking 15 mn, then it's ready.
- And long stems, that's for fibers, I make solid cordages out of them. The thread I make from the 4 corners of only one nettle stem can easily carry 10 kg,
but not my 50 and some more kg.
- It's solid, so I make necklaces which will not break, less regular than other fibers because of the knots of the stem, as you can see on the photo.
And I also make very solid bracelets !
- To make solid links, you can directly use fibers (without weaving any cordage). That's how I fixed the rotor blades of my wind spindle, seaside version
- Eat the seeds ? I think about it since I once transported nettles in my car: the floor was covered with seeds.
